Dear friends!

This April we opened our first Essentrics/Classical Stretch studio. Take a look at the photos we have posted. The studio is located smack in the middle of Montreal’s golden square mile in a renovated grey stone mansion.

I am really proud of this studio as it fills the precise requirements for a safe and effective workout. The mirrors which are floor to ceiling let the students self correct and easily follow the instructor. The size is perfect for filming which was our primary reason to opening a studio in the first place. The sound is perfect for hearing the teacher and music without either being overly loud and offensive. The view is into our private courtyard which will be filled with flowers and comfortable summer furniture. The size comfortable fits 15 students keeping the class size both intimate and big enough to get that excitement of a group experience. The lighting is bright with large windows and a skylight in the day and state of the art eco-friendly lighting for evening classes.

But the best part for me as a teacher is the wood floor, which has a sprung effect to soften the impact on joints and a perfect balance between smoothness and just enough resistance to prevent it from being slippery.

This studio is a real work of art. Every detail from the floating mirrors, the unique painted cement floors in the changing room, limestone tiles and modern light fixtures has made this a real little gem, and the most beautiful studio I have ever seen.

Melissa and Sahra both love interior design and were excited to take on this project.  The design choices were a combination of our input and Cliff Stendel – architect, designer and owner of our building.  We felt blessed to have someone with so much knowledge, experience and style on our team; he made our vision into something greater than we could have imagined.

I am sure that it will be featured in many magazines in the future. I hope you drop by to take a class and have a coffee with us when next you are in Montreal.

Registration for the summer schedule starts May 3rd. We have a full schedule of noon and evening classes.

As the space is limited it is a registration by class system. You will have to choose the hours that suit you and sign up for a session of 13 weeks. There are lots of options from one to 5 classes per week. But if you are planning on joining us I would advise that you register as soon as possible as it is on a first come first serve basis and when the classes are full we will not be adding extra spaces.

We are also offering two 3 week intense summer programs for high performance athletes.  Space is limited to 12 athletes per category. The instructors for the 3 week intense summer programs are professional ballet dancers and master Classical Stretch teachers.

If you want to register please email us at info@essentricsstudio or drop by the studio.

Ask Miranda

Hi,

I really like your insights in how to help the body heal and strengthen. I have problems with both of my Achilles, that flair up regularly. They have given me trouble for the past 35 years and seem to becoming more irritable as I age. I know you will have a answer for this, as you have helped me in many ways already through you PBS programs. Keep up the great work.

Thanks,

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

The exercises for the Achilles are all the heel raisers, the flexing & pointing of the feet, the calf stretches and even some hamstring exercises.

The best thing is to do a 1/2 hr workout 4 to 5 times a week and that should keep your Achilles problem under control. The muscles work in chains and so to heel one group you need to work the entire chains. The DVD's or TV shows all work complete chains
.Hope this helps!

My best
,

Miranda

Retreats & Getaways

Mothers Day Retreat in Montreal

Over the years Sahra my daughter & I seem to be reversing roles. She is always fusing over my health, checking that I am feeling well and getting enough rest.  Over the years we’ve noticed a trend towards this revere of roles between mothers and daughters at our Jamaica & Mexico retreats.

It just so happens that this year we are holding our first Montreal retreat at our new studio over Mothers day weekend. We’d though to mention it to any daughters who want to bring their mothers to celebrate a healthy lifestyle with us this mother’s day!

Last chance to sigh up for May and June Montreal and Jamaica retreat!

Training and Certification Program

image

Part of the reason we opened a studio was to be able to offer regular teacher training workshops. We already have over 300 instructors trained and get constant requests for more workshops. The problem has always dates, availabilities and scheduling. Now we can offer many options to instructors who would like to fit the trainings in their schedules.

We are building a distance learning teacher training system where a teacher does not ever need to attend a live workshop. However as we all know there is no replacement for live instruction. Instructors can ask questions, get corrections, interact with each other and gain a much deeper understanding of the program by attending a live workshop. The certification workshops are 2-days lasting 16 hours. Instructors have a choice of inexpensive to high-end hotels depending on their budget. We have a YWCA a few blocks away which is very reasonable and a Sofitel Hotel beside us which is slightly more pricey and a B& B in front which is in-between.

You can chose between Level 1 training which gives you the fundamentals of Classical Stretch/Essentrics or you can attend both the Level 1 & 2 workshops (4 days total) which gives you the fundamentals as wells as the full breakdown of 25 trademark moves (anatomy, objects and benefits, how to do them correctly, common corrections and tempo).

Next workshop Dates

Montreal, Qc Canada

May 15th to 16th – Level 2 Workshop
July 22nd to 25th–  4 day Workshop Level 1 & Level 2

To learn more about the Classical Stretch teacher training or if you have any questions about becoming a teacher you can read more about it on my website or feel free to write to training@classicalstretch.com

A Spine Sequence!

The most powerful benefit from this sequence is the increase in the flexibility of the spine.

It is influenced by Caribbean dances which have their roots in both African and European cultures, creating a unique form of expression and cultural identity. Many elements of traditional African dance can be seen in Caribbean dance forms, fusing together the elements of history and culture. In popular dances such as the Rumba, Mambo, and Samba. These dance forms develop both strong flexible spinal columns and hips.

It is these movements that we are trying to mimic (in slow motion) as we do these spine exercises.

These exercises relive back pain, improve posture, develop strong flexible back and hip muscles, and stimulate balance reflexes. They stretch and strengthen every muscle related to the spine.
