miranda

Dear friends ,

Over the past years, as I’ve been getting older, I’ve become increasingly interested in finding out how I can stay as vibrant and as healthy as possible. I have been doing a lot of research on the aging process and am really excited about the latest research on the science of aging.

One of the most exciting things about aging that I have discovered is that I really don’t need to age at the rate that I had assumed was inevitable. I can slow down my own aging process to a virtual standstill.

This brings up the complexities of aging; we have our skin, our muscles and our health all ageing at different rates. We can keep our bodies and health under control and young with exercise and healthy eating, but can’t do too much without expensive procedures to prevent the sagging skin and wrinkles. While exercise can help with vitality and brilliance of the skin, the wrinkles are inevitable to some degree even with good skin care and sun block. And I have to admit; from a personal point of view I don’t mind the wrinkles; my face should reflect my age.

What I don’t want to do is gain weight, loose my health and loose my mobility. I want to stay active and able to live with as much gusto in my old age as I had in my twenties and I do now!  I don’t want my chronological aging to stop me from enjoying activities with my friends and family because I can’t walk or run or keep up with everyone.  And even though I’ve had many illnesses, I’ve recovered from them all very quickly! I want to keep recovering as quickly as I have in the past, in order to feel as excited about living every day as I do today.

Over the next few months and in my next TV series, I am going to share with you some of what I’ve learned about staying young. I am sure it will come as no surprise to you that much of staying young has to do with daily exercise and healthy eating.
In the past two months I have been trying to practice what I preach and eat mainly organic non pesticide grown food as well as do a minimum of 30 minutes of Classical Stretch a day. Since I began this little regime I can’t even tell you how much better I have been feeling!  Despite being tired from overwork, I’m more energetic and have lost a sluggish feeling that was starting to drag me under.

I will keep you updated on my vision of food, exercise and youth. I’ve always suspected that they are connected but it’s always better to have the science to back up hunches.  So I will leave you with one of my new rules that might help you feel better as well:  If your food looks too perfect; it probably is.  This means it’s likely been modified genetically. If you can remember what food looks like fresh out of the family garden, then you’ll remember that it was far from perfect. If it feels wrong, it is wrong. I’m now buying less food, but better food and sticking to organic when I have the choice.

Here’s to a healthy new start!

Updates For our Canadian Fans!

Because of intense lobbying and customer complaints, Rogers will be maintaining the WPBS Watertown station.

Dear Friends of WPBS-TV:

CONGRATULATIONS!  WPBS-TV and Rogers Cable have worked together to ensure a more reliable fiber connection, and WPBS-TV is able to continue serving the Ottawa Community!  This news from Rogers could not have come at a better time.  WPBS-TV and Rogers have created a more reliable feed source of our signal that is a win-win situation for both parties.  In all sincerity Rogers has been kind and cooperative in the discussions with WPBS-TV over the past 48 hours.

Words alone can never describe how much the overwhelming outpour of support from our friends in the Ottawa area has meant to “the little station that could” over the past weeks.  Special thanks go to the City of Ottawa Councillor Rick Chiarelli for his unwavering support, time and energy on behalf of the City of Ottawa and WPBS-TV; Gord McDougall, CFRA News Reporter & TV Commentator for his encouragement and friendship; and, the countless members, viewers, supporters & friends of WPBS-TV who refused to give up and remained committed to the end.  We could name many, but without their permission we will wait to ‘brag them up.’

How does an organization go about thanking everyone for their character, depth of emotion and heart-felt hard work?  We’re not quite sure just yet.  But, believe us Ottawa, WPBS-TV will not let you down!

In the coming days, WPBS-TV will be creating on-air spots and making additional announcements with our on-line community of supporters.  Please call us with any questions or concerns you may have.  Or, just congratulate yourself on a job well done!

As always, we remain,

Tom Hanley, Lynn Brown & Staff

JAMAICA RETREAT

December 5th to December 11th 2009, 6 night retreat

In June we added a new destination for our Fitness Holidays:  Jamaica!  After having filmed in this stunning country and staying in a top-notch resort, we really wanted to share the destination with others.  Not to mention the fact that the Iberostar is located on one of the most beautiful beaches in the country!  The water is calm and warm which is important since the ocean and beach therapy are an important part of our fitness holiday.  Now that Air Jamaica is also one of our partners, we hope that many more people will be able to join our upcoming retreats!

In our June Retreat in Jamaica, we did 2 classes a day, early morning outdoors and late afternoon in the fitness studio.  In our free time we played tennis, relaxed on the beach, went to the spa, and some members planned day trips off the resort.  As a group we hired a tour guide and visited a local plantation, great house, cane fields and a local market!

My friend Sharon Italy retreat

For the last two years we have been trying very hard to organize a Classical Stretch fitness holiday in Italy in partnership with one of our good friends Sharon Cadiz, PhD.   We met Sharon and her husband Ed on one of the very first retreats that we held in Mexico!  Sharon has since joined us twice a year at our various events and I was a presenter at her own workshop in NY this last spring!  We had a great time working together and wanted to find a way to do it again. While giving a talk in Italy she discovered an Agriturismo hotel only 20 minutes from Rome called Villa Lina (http://www.villalina.com/); a place she felt would be perfect for a future retreat where we could offer a combination of Classical Stretch along with Sharon’s teachings on healing and wellness!

She was right; the spot is ideal!  The problem is finding a time where we are both free.  We are still working on the perfect date.  However Sharon will be offering her retreat in September 2010 with or without me. If I am able to attend, I will give a 3 hour workshop.  My main plan would be to learn about Italian cooking and explore Italy! I won’t know for sure what I am doing until after the Olympics.

Amazing Testimonials

I recently sent out an email requesting your testimonials and feedback and I have been overwhelmed with the response.  First I’d like to say Thank You!!

All your stories inspire me and encourage me to carry on.

There were more testimonials than I expected and can only use one per show. However all the testimonials will be put on the web site next April 2010 with the author’s permission and no-last names or emails addresses.

MIranda

As a former group fitness instructor, I have been exposed to many exercise formats and programs. One morning a year ago I was channel surfing for travel info to work during a Colorado snowstorm.

I happened upon Classical Stretch and started doing the stretches. I immediately thought, "this is something unique, gentle and very effective." You have done so much good with your Esmonde Technique. Sometimes when I do a stretch I can't help but think I would not have the courage to bend like that, yet I trust you to not have us do anything that would hurt. Instead, I always feel so much better afterwards. I am reaching for the long slender body that we all seek.

God bless you, Miranda, for your program and I must say I love the heavenly places you broadcast from!

Toni , Colorado

Dear Miranda and CS team.

I began watching/doing "Classical Stretch" when Miranda was in view in Canada and upper state New York.  That may have been six years ago?
The half-hour routines, five days a week, have made a true difference in my physical activity and well-being.

Exercise has always been fun for me, but as I have grown older, I have had to adapt to my changing ability.  Classical Stretch has helped me continue to maintain strength and agility.  It has reshaped my body to be slimmer and sleeker.  I am pleased that now, at age 78, I can follow the exercise routines easily.  (Sometimes I need to ease up on one part of the body.)  The lumpiness of the hip line has disappeared.

Now, I am more flexible than I was when I was younger.  I see friends and acquaintances my age groan as they climb stairs or get up from a chair.  They try never to have to get up from sitting on the floor!  Those are no problem for me.

I love what this program has done for me.  My oldest daughter also follows Miranda each weekday.  I am working on the others two to do the same.

Thank you, Miranda, for dedicating your life to helping others improve theirs.

Margaret , Alamo, CA

Getting to Know Miranda

What was your favorite thing about Jamaica?
Definitely the beach; the warm water and the beach. The Iberostar is located on one of the most perfect beaches in Jamaica and is protected by a coral reef. Because of this, the water was perfectly still; it was like paradise!! You’ll see how beautiful the ocean is in the new series as we filmed quite a few shows on the beach. After our shoots ended (we filmed from 5am to10am) we would go for breakfast, (which is my favorite meal and they make the best breakfasts in Jamaica) take a little nap, and then go soak in the ocean for a few hours!

What’s your favorite exercise retreat location?
I love all our retreat locations and all for different reasons. Mexico is an all-inclusive resort in the sun, so the combination of the exercise, the heat of the sun, and the fact that we don’t have to carry a wallet for a week makes for a very nice holiday!! It’s a break for our stressful lives and allows us time to relax and not have to answer phone calss and drive a car. Montreal is fun because its my home town and I love to show it to others. I also love the fitness studio at our gym which has mirrored walls and real dance barres! Something we don’t get at other places. Saratoga Springs NY was also unique. Every morning we would have to take a 20-minute walk through the national park on out way to our dance studio! Everyone really enjoyed that.

Training and Certification Program

Teaching this program is so rewarding and I’m thrilled that more and more people are asking me if I think they could be teachers.  I really do feel that all people can teach; but they may teach at different levels and for different purposes.  Some people want to teach their friends and neighbors, others want to teach small groups in their community or at their various tennis and golf clubs. And there are those that would like to teach in a fitness center to group classes or as a private trainer!

One thing I have noticed is that people who take the teacher training program get into better shape than their students. This is because they cannot miss a class and work really hard as they teach.  Learning to be an apprentice level teacher is an amazing way for anyone to get in shape!  You learn all the objectives, techniques and anatomy, and you learn the correct and incorrect way of moving. It’s amazing how much better a student you are once you’ve learned more about what you are doing.

Whatever the reason behind your desire to become an instructor, you will be highly rewarded when both you and your pupils begin to experience dramatic body and health changes.

If you have any questions about becoming a teacher you can read more about it on my website or feel free to write to training@classicalstretch.com.com
